Tolerance

At the beginning of the school year, Erin is deeply disturbed by a racial
caricature of one of her students that she finds being passed around the room.
Why does Erin compare this drawing of an African-American student to the
drawings of Jewish men during the Holocaust?

because in the jewish drawings the pictures of their faces their noses were enlargened past reality. Just like on the note being passed around he had enlarged lips.

The "other" Evan said...

During the Holocaust, drawings of the Jewish men described their "unusually large" noses. The drawing passed around the class had "unusually large" lips. The same kind of discrimination is going around in the two situations.

They both had a stereotype, in the form of a big nose, that they made bigger, like the African-American kid had the big lips.

Because in the drawing it made fun of the student long before any of the students had even bother to get to know him and it really hurt his feelings. It was similar to the Jewish drawings because they enlarged facial features past their possible size.

Erin compares this drawing to the drawing of Jewish men during the Holocaust because they had a lot in common. They both were exaggerated and they both were hurtful to a person. It may not seem like they have anything in common but they do.

well i feel the same way. they made them seem like they we monsters & like they shouldn't be here. all what they did was make them feel bad. :/

Because during the Holocaust, they described Jewish men by their drawings. and she was also getting described by a drawing another classmate made of her.

Like in the racist pictures portrayed of the Jewish facial features, the student is facing the same discrimination and racial prejudice. We do not realize that sometimes other people's features can "characterize" where they come from, and how they face the world. Making fun of a minority is easy, but sometimes the smallest of things can hurt other people deeply.

i think that they wanted to make fun of Sharaud's big lips, but they had no prior knowledge that the Jews were made fun of the exact same way only for them they threw the Jews nose way out of proportion.

I think because everyone judged a book by its cover,so in the picture everything was enlarged so then they compared the student to it. So they made the kid feel bad by making fun of them.

in the holocaust the their were drawings of Jews with huge noses. the drawing was the same type of stereotype, except saying that he had unusually large lips.

During the Holocaust, the Germans used to draw pictures of the Jewish with a very big nose. Just like in the Holocaust, in this part of the book, Mrs.G finds a drawing of an African-American student with very big lips. Students were making fun of him like the Germans used to do with the Jewish.

i think she was compared it to the holocaust because during the holocaust that is what happened. someone not very artistic drew picture of one jewish man with a big nose. and the little kid drew a picture of an african amercian with big black lips. it is the same because thats what stated the holocaust, if it started the holocaust then it can start another war.

Listerine said...

She relates it to the Jews because of how other people did the same thing to people today. They would use the drawings to offend them and say they were the reason that Jesus was dead. Erin saw that these racial insults and drawings was like the Holocaust but in a different way.

I think that they should respect him and i think that the picture of the African American was sad and that his lips were not that big.

MikeyDeezy said...

She compares the insulting caricature to that of drawings of Jewish men in the Holocaust because their features were both recreated in a way that made them look inferior to everyone else.

erin compares the drawings because they both show racial discrimination. back then they were just Jews with big noses, but that led to the holocaust. the drawing of the african american with big lips shows the same type of Racisim.

i agree wth mostly everyones comments
they did make them feel like monsters ,like if they were not even human

Daniiela :D said...

Because the Jewish drawings discriminated and made fun of people because of their noses. And they were passing a note around making fun of his big lips.

that one guy said...

I think that the two drawings were compared because both of the drawings facial features were enlarged. The African Americans lips were proportioned out of size and so were the Jews lips and I think that really hurt those accused.

Daniiela :D said...

because the Jewish drawings made fun of people with big noses and the drawing that was passed around made fun of his big lips

Jermzz said...

in the drawing of the student it exaggerated his unique apperance and made him look bad and in the drawing of the jews it did the same thing with their noses

emo ninja said...

both the pictures show racial discrimination. one shows the jews with exaggerated noses, and one shows an african american with exaggerated lips.

atehsarah said...

because the drawing are somewhat similar to each other. Just as Sharaud was being discriminated for how he looks, the Jews were discriminated because of their religion.

beto said...

because when they drew the jewish people they drew them with big noses so in the note they drew him with a big nose.

Alberto Loza said...

because the germans also drew jew people with exagerateed noses jiust like the drawing being passed through the class had enlarged lips

Andres Castro said...

tolerance is giving the people the power to speak. and to not judge people by what they say and not to make fun of them. It's also letting people think just like you

Drod said...

I agree with Alberto that in the holocaust, the Nazis drew the Jews with giant noses

Unknown said...

because thats how it helped the Holocsaust cause they would make fun of jews to put them down and thats what they were doing to kid by making the picture and passing it around the class.

She compares the two, because they are basically the same, just about a different race and the situation is different. At school, the note being passed around was making funof the Af. Am. boy by exaggerating his lips. Now in the Jewish situation, their are exaggerating the sizes of their noses. Either way, it's discrimination and its wrong and hurts people.

kelsey said...

the picture the of the african american had HUGE lips, during the Holocaust jewish men were drawn with over sized noses. I think its amazing how we still have discrimination in this world, even when major conflicts in history acured because of discrimination.

she must have felt that the one who drew this must not like african americans or jews. mabye she didnt feel safe any more

BECUASE THEY WERE BOTH BEING DISCRIMINATED AND TEASED BY THE WAY THEY LOOK IN WHICH THEY BOTH FELT BAD ABOUT IT.

Miranda said...

I would be angrey with this too! All the students think its all for fun, but they were making fun of him and hurt the guys feelings. It's never good to make fun of someone because they are dufferent from you or a different race.

Erin was disturbed because drawings as racist as this one were very similiar to the ones the Nazis drew of Jewish men. They were meant to ridicule and put down the Jews, like the one Erin found. Except this one was being offensive to the African-American student everyone hated.

Erin compared the drawing of Sharaud to the drawing of Jewish men during the Halocaust because in the drawing of Sharaud he had very big lips drawn on him, and in the drawings of the Jewish men the Germans had drawn very big noses. It hurt their pride and allowed Hitler to prey on the insecurities that they developed after that to make them fear him.

I think she compared the drawing that was being passed around the classroom with the drawings of the Jewish men during the Holocaust because they were both ways to make fun of or insult the people they were drawing. In the case of the student that was drawn, they were making fun of him for being African American like the Jewish people who were made fun of for being Jewish.

Unknown said...

on the jewish drawings they drew them with bigger facial features. They are similar because the picture of sharad had exagerated lips because of his nationality.

j&e said...

because in the drawim the jewish had bigger noses and as the drawimng got passed around the class realizded they had large lips so it was kind of the same situation

Jayvee23 said...

Because in the holocaust, drawings of the Jewish men described that they had really big noses. The drawing that was passed around the class had some very large lips lips. In this case, big noses for jews and big lips for african americans.

ANABEATRIZ:) said...

BECAUSE THEY WERE BOTH BEING DISCRIMINATED AND BECAUSE SINCE THE JEWS WERE MADE FUN SHE FELT LIKE A REALLY CLOSE CONNECTION BETWEEN THEM.

platiniumgirl said...

in the holocaust the jewish where drawn as really ugly people they where also made fun of and harassed thats what the student note and the jewish in the holocaust had in common.

gearheadkiller said...

she compared them be cause both the jews and the african americans went through there ups and downs

Spaztic110 said...

To me, Erin (Ms. Gruwell right?) has made the connection between the two situations because they both involve a discriminating influence that may give others (such as Shaurad and jewish men) unnecessary pain, despite their previous actions. Also, they are exaggerated as propaganda and may be similar to which has caused things like the Holocaust.

Cristian said...

i think that like the jewish and how the nazis drew pictures and portraits of the jewish noses and faces, theclass was making fun of his mouth and his face

MikeyDeezy said...

do we have any homework?

amanda said...

The drawing in the class room being passed around is similar to the drawing of the jewish men during the holocaust because they are both making fun of people. on the note the picture shows an african american with big lips just like in the picture the jewish men are drawn with big noses

many Germans discriminated because of the drawing much like the situation in ms.Gruwell's class
