Overcoming Adversity

Miep Gies, the woman who hid Anne Frank, is a hero to Ms. Gruwell’s
students. What does Miep Gies mean when she tells Ms. Gruwell’s students,
“You are heroes everyday.”?

i think that she doesn't consider herself a hero because she did what she though was right. And she thinks the freedom writers are the heros because there going to the next level in education. They're the "loser class" ut there doing things even the honors class haven't thought of

She said that because the kids themselves are living the life that kids like Anne Frank and Zlata have lived. She also said that because the Freedom Writers are trying to change themselves to better people.

I think she means that the students have the power to do good every day and help others. By being helpful they can be heroes to others and to themselves.

i think miep that what miep meant when she told the students they were heroes everyday was that everyday they survived and stayed in school. I really have no clue what she meant im just guessing.

when she's saying, "you are heroes everyday." she means that in their own battles they have everyday. like dealing with other kids about racism and making a choice whether to join a gang or not. (:

i think she meant to say this to encourage other kids how to be all that they could be. She had her own way of showing the students that what she did to her wasn't heroism but what they were doing was well beyond compare to hiding a family. They were trying to over come the racism that overcomes us today.

I think that she means that the students are the heroes of their community becuase they are trying to stop the violence with their wisdom. Meip thinks that the students are the real heroes because of how they turned their lives around to make it better and to become a better person.

She means that every "little person" can be a hero in someone else's eyes.

She said that they were daily heroes, because they have expirences like Ann and Zalta everyday. They lived in an "undeclared war" according to the book every day.

i think what mieps means by ms gruwells students are heroes everyday is because mieps already made a diffrence and the students have the power to make a dirrence NOW.

she tells everyone that she isn't a hero she just did what she thought it was the write thing to do. She tells them that they are heroes because they are going through a rough time and that they should consider themselves heroes.

When she tells the students they're heroes everyday she means that they go through very hard stuff everyday, and like Anne Frank they don't give up.

Meip Gies means the students are heroes everyday because they are inspirations to people and students everywhere. They have to survive in their dangerous neighborhood every day, but somehow they find time to put into their school work. Even though they come from different backgrounds, they come together as a class and learn together.

I think she is trying to say that they are heroes because they are trying to do what is the right thing. Also because they are trying to stop being discriminated and trying to e the same.

I believe that Miep is trying to tell the Ms. Gruwell's students that they are the ones who can change their future as well as the future of others.

I think that she is saying there hero's by the way they live and how they have to protect them self like Anne Frank and Zlata and by helping other in there lives.

Miep dosent think she's a "hero" for hiding Anne. What she means by this is that anyone can make a difference. Anybody.

When she tells Ms. Gruwells students that they are heroes everyday, she means that they can find a way to keep on living through their life like Anne Frank did.

I think she doesn't reference herself to being a hero because doing the right thing should not be a question of being a hero or not, but being a normal person. Doing the right thing should be something that everyone does everyday. What she meant when she said the kids were the hero's, is that the fact that they are actually trying to change their lives and going beyond what is expected is worthy of being a hero.

i think that she said that they are the heroes because they came from so little and now they are people who are now looking for more in their life. and to gather up money to seek miep was real heroic to her

i think that she considers of what the students go through everyday from shootings to race wars to this school were they want to learn. Miep Gies also has some respect for ms gruwell's class trying to teach all these students who don't even care anymore and she is teaching them that they can do what they can to save themselves and there families.

When Miep tells Ms. G's students that they are heroes everyday it means that they find a way to keep living their lives like she did

I think she felt she wasn't a hero herself because she did what she was supposed to do but the students are trying to overcome discrimination and racial tension by learning about many events that happened in the past dealing with this. But it isn't something they were supposed to do. It's their choice.

Well whati think she's saying that just being able to overcome everdays obstacles is an accomplishment. It takes courage and faith to get through the day and be able to face lifes challenges and confront them with all that you have.

I think she said this because they are the future and they can change things and make it better! They are trying to be better people and make peace because in reality, no one wants to be at war with guns shooting around them and their friends dying.

What Miep Gies meant by saying "You are heroes everyday," is that even though she did a courageous and valuable thing, she was being humble about and admitted that just by resisting the temptation of being just like everyone else, they were heroes in their own way. They're heroes for standing up for what they strongly believed in and taking the risk of changing the expectations for the genrations to come by overcoming their fear and expressing it into creative words. They are heroes for proving everyone who didn't believe in them wrong. For breaking barriers between races and getting along.

i think that miep doesnt think she is a hero because she thinks what she did was right and she doesnt consider herself as one and she says to Ms. Gruwell students that they are the hero because they did something that they would never expect that they would accomplish.

the reason i think she said that because they go through a war everyday and they are now trying not to get invole with the gangs and the fights and killing and everything else thats happen around them.

kelsey said...

I think shes telling them that they can do good in everyday life. And that not to think that shes a hero whe they are the true hers.:)

the way to defeat adversity is not to let your your hard head come first but to let them go and use your heart first. just because they killed your family doesn't mean you should kill them than you will become one of them.

Unknown said...

I think she said that because she knows that these kids were going through similar things that Anne Frank and Zlata are going through. She also knows that the freedom writers are trying their best to change their ways.

gearheadkiller said...

she meant that we can all be heros if we do the right thing.

platiniumgirl said...

i yhink that by saying that she means that they are heroes because they are making a difference because they where the underdogs and now they are the best class in high school i think thats what miep meant.

j&e said...

I think she meant you guys are all heroes because she did what she thought was right by hiding anne frank and there all doing what they think is right by really starting to try in school and having a better education and having courage because there the " bad class"

Cristian said...

i think that she means that the students are heroes because they aren't being bad and ignorant like the nazis

julsola007 said...

I don't really know what she meant by saying that, but if I were to guess I would say she meant that they overcome things everyday like heroes and are heroes in the eyes of other kids in their neighborhood. They also have the strength of heroes to go to school everyday and say "no" to the bad influences in their lives.

I believe that when Miep Gies stated that the Freedom Writer students where the heroes everyday, she must think that she was not heroic because she thinks what she did is what any woman would do. She believes that the students are making a big difference in the world by showing a good example such as helping those in Bosnia and influencing others to become less discriminant.

I think that she means that we, even at our young age, can make a difference if we really want to and we try hard. She means that we have the capability to bring upon change and change this world. WE ARE THE GENERATION THAT WILL CHANGE THIS NATION!!!

I think she said that because the kids right now are going through the same things that anne and zlata went through. Also because they are making many changes in life to better themeselves.
