Finding Success

Describe how writing in journals helps transform the lives of the students. How
does writing “free” the students from their pain? What connections are the students making with their peers when they are editing each others journal entries?

it gave them a chance to vent their feelings so not all their bad thoughts were trapped inside them screwing with their emotions. When their peers revised and edited each others journals they made conections like "oh you went throught that to mabye were not so different after all"

writing sometimes "frees" people by "letting go" of trapped emotions, and when other people make connections they have a chance to release their emotions and feelings

Writing about something in a journal can help someone let out bottled up feelings. Instead of violence, a person can yell at their paper, in words. Instead of pain, words. When the students edit each others journal entries, they can relate to the person's story. They know that at some point in their life they have probably faced the same kind of problem. Words don't mean anything until you write them.

This help the students, because most teachers say write a essay on Shakespeare but Ms.Gruwell says right your life on a sheet of paper. It helps alot by righting your story down even though your righting it, It good to get the bad out of your head. When they edit each others papers they can read it and say wow im going trough the same thing, but in a much different way. I feel like other people edit there stories is good because people need to now that when there is racial wars and you dont now how the other race feels this is a good way to get people talking to each other and see from there perspective

Writing frees the student from pain because it takes you away from reality. It frees your thoughts and lets you express anything you feel at that moment.
Students can make connections with others because they have probably been through the same pain. They edit eachother's journals so they may realize what other students are going through and to reflect on how that affects their life.

Most students have problems they want to share but cant because they are afraid of what other people might think of them. Writing makes it possible for them to express what they feel inside without worrying other people might judge them. Since the students are editing each others' writing, they can relate to the author because they can understand what they are going through.

writing in their journals help other students understand the pain and suffering the other students feel or have felt.i think they "free" their pain because the have kept the pain locked up for so long and releasing it frees their pain and also because once they have shared others can give them love to support them.students are making connections all the time because they can relate to events like rape, child abuse and more.

i think that it "frees" them of their pain because, their expressing themselves and getting emotions out that they have held onto for a long time.

Writing is a way for everyone, including the freedom writers, to express themselves. When you write something down, you feel as though you told someone something but without actually having to say it. Now, the students feel as though they have someone to talk to and express themselves. When they are editing each others entries they see that they are not alone. They feel like they have someone to talk to and relate to them. Writing is not just for "Freedom Writers" its for everyone and anyone who needs to express themselves.

Journals can help people because they can express themselves and write what they are felling. writing "free" does help students with their pain because they can wirte all their problems and they can speak out and dont just have their problems to themselves. they are not judging each other they are just reading what their classmates wrote about so they can feel or compare what another classmate feels.

writing is used to let the student release the emotions they have kept inside, and by editing others entries, can make them see that others may be in the same situation, and that they are not alone.

They are able to let their emotions out and get painful things off their chest from their own past. They are also able to connect with their peers after reading and editing others stories because some have nearly the same problems as others in the class so they can connect by family problems and issues.

When the students write it is a way of letting out their emotions were in the street they really can't show what they are feeling. Also the students might feel like they are all alone in their struggle with their problems and to find out that there is someone out there going through the same thing helps them to keep on going.

Writing in journals helps transform lives of students because sometimes students are too shy to talk to people about their emotional and physical pains. Writing helps the students release the pain and any emotions that they are hiding from others by eliminating the human factor, the students wont be judged if they are using numbers instead of their real names. When the students are peer editting they make connections with the entries that remind them of things that have either happened in their lives or in the lives of people around them.

I think that the students writing their journals helps them express and show its true emotions and scene they write freely so like how they want to write and everything it just makes it easier for them to express themselves. Also editing each others journals helps them understand what they're peers are going through and see what other people think and see.

The journals helped the students let out their innermost feelings. They were able to relate their stories to their peers

Writing in journals really helps other students b/c's when the syudents look over another students journal for any reason, they find out that they are not alone because that same student has the same problem at home or in their family. So they will communicate more and now have a friend that will always be their for them. [:

Writing free helps the students b/c's they can talk about anything they want to talk about. They can either talk about family problems, friend problems, boyfriend/girlfriend problems and etc.

The connections that the students are making are that they are not alone in problems of any kind. They are all in this together ;]

It helped the students express themselves in a way that was not violent. They could also reflect on their own actions and the actions of others. From there they made their own decisions about the reason why their life was the way it was. It let them see things that they could try to help to fix some situations. However some things were beyond their control.

writing gives them a chance to breathe...lets them express themselvs and their lives through their eyes. it shows what its like to live a single day in there life.

i personally love to write because its really easy to express myself in a way that no one can tell you if there is a wrong and right way to do it. They free themselves because they tell there stories anonymously and no one can judge or show sadness about what happened to them. Some people like having others to share their sadness and some just like to educate on what is a possible happening and what the outcome of their event was. When the edited their peers papers they were learning about each other in a general idea and not in a way that threaten their social standing or "rank".

The journals helped the kids express themselves. They weren't keeping it all bottled up inside, but they were venting there feelings to something that couldn't judge them. They didn't have to monitor what they said, because no one was there to comment or judge them on their past actions. When they were correcting each others stories, it reminded them that they aren't so different. Reading other peoples account of their lives, uncensored, can bring you into a whole new state of understanding.

Writing frees the students because that way they can express what they feel and they don't have to worry about what others think. When they edit each others journal entries, they make connections and they can relate to some of the other students.

Writing in journals transforms lives because they can express themselves and be open just by writing. When they edit they can see what they have in common and what is happening in other peoples lives. They are also seeing that they are not so different.

i think it gives them a way to escape their chaos infested homes and express themself, then they realize that they are not alone and that their peers have a conection with them

I think that writing in a journal will help you because it will sometimes help let bad memories out. It also helps that other people look at what you write because it will also help you make connections with those people.

I think that having a journal helps the kids to speak out their problems, and it frees peoples problems. They are letting there classmates know whats going on in their homes.

Jayvee23 said...

It Frees them because they can express themselves. They could have problems at their house or at school and they have nowhere or no one to talk to. That is why they use their journals.

Writing in journals has helped the students express all their anger and sadness in a non- violent way. When I feel like I'm going to burst with no way to express it, I write it out!! I think we all need that.

it helps them because no one will judge them and no one will put them down, and they can write what they want to say what they want to say.

The writing helps the students to feel better by helping them "get things off their shoulders". It also helps them to connect with their peers by sharing similar experiences.

i think they have a chnace to express themselves freely without being judges and at the same time it kind of gives the other person a chance to see what that person that wrote is really feeling and it takes out alot of anger and frustration in there lives not only that but its kind of a time to get away from it all.

they free their pain by expressing their feelings through writing and they narrate what happened to them that makes them feel hurt inside

I think writing in journals helps transform the lives of students because students get the chance of expressing themselves without having to go through the pressure of sharing their lives or situations in front of people. Writing is a way students can express themselves and let everything they need to share so they feel better. The students realized once they began editing their pupils' diaries that they all have a lot more in common than what they can imagine and they don't feel that they are going through their hard situations alone.

I think that by writing journal entries it helped the Freedom Writers ventilate their feelings and stories and getting these angry thought and emotions out in a healthy way instead of joining gangs and getting into fights. It also helped them to get to know each other by comparing stories and finding the similarities behind ethnicity and skin colors.

it is like telling somebody your deepest secrets, but instead they tell it to your journal. it helps it admit there stuff like secrets so it helps them help there personal feelings. so other people could know what they are going through so they could help them.

Well the journals are in a way the true friend that the students never have. They can express their feelings and write about their problems in it without having the insecurity of having someone tell. The students are finding that they aren't the only ones with their kind of problems and they can help each other overcome what they are feeling inside.

when they write on their journal they get to express their feelings and they really get to see their life

i think it was a good opportunity for the students to express themselves, and let their feelings out. When the students revised the journal entries, it think it changed how the students thought of each other.

i do think that writing helps the students "free"the students from teir problems because they get their feelings ou once i read that writing your bad feelings down in a paper contained you from exploding with someone who doesnt have the fault of anyting that happens to you so i do think that writing helps them "free" from their problems.

I feel as though the students need a punching bag so they can complain (without sounding like brats) to them. There are those who need places to turn to so they have an expressive diary where they write and whine (with reason) while telling a story to those who would listen (which isn't much in the adult group). Those who read the stories are comforted there are not alone and others are feeling the same pain they are (which I find strange, who wants others to feel pain?)

aaammm IT good because they can express their emotions and that way they don't have all of does fellings in them and that is a better thing.

Writing can "free" someone by letting them write out their feelings and problems. Venting about pain/problems with written words is the same as venting about them with spoken words, which is very relieving. They can relieve pain with writing instead of something hurtful, like words or physical violence. The students are also making connections with other students through the diary entries they are editing. They are connecting because, as they read the diaries, they are relating to their stories. They have either been through the same thing or have known someone who was going to through it.
